It will take us about four hours and a half to reach the town of Kalambaka (last town before Meteora). All of a sudden there comes into view a cluster of time forgotten monasteries precariously nestling over the magic solitude of mysterious rocks that rise sky-high on the plain of Thessaly.
“objects suspended in mid air”. Built upon inaccessible rocky peaks under impossible conditions these magnificent monasteries embody the eremetic ideal of Christianity in the 15th century A.D. and showcase wonderful wall frescoes of this post- byzantine period. The mechanism and net in which monks, pilgrims and materials were hauled up vertically alongside the steep cliffs bear witness of no practicable roads in a period when fearsome attacks awaited every place of import. The quaint majesty and foreverness of the “heavenly columns” and monasteries in Meteora, will hold every visitor ecstatic and be imprinted on mind and senses for life. Our overnight stay will enable you to visit and admire the most significant monasteries of the community of Meteora while on our way back to Athens, depending on the time left on our side, we might optionally visit the land of Thermopylae where the great decisive battle of the Greeks against the Persians took place.
